The temperature had dropped almost to 60 degrees by the time I turned off the TV and headed towards my room; but somehow, I’m stifling hot right now. I feel almost feverish– probably coming down with yet another severe bout of hypochondria. It always hits me at the worst times. My aunt told me I could take the beautiful bike upon which I realized speed, I am heading home soon, and I have finally come to the last page in that glorious tome. What a beautiful read. How well written, for a little private hobby, as it is rumored to be. GONE WITH THE WIND, looking all the better in capital letters. What fully realized characters, what fantastic prose. I certainly can’t capture it. I don’t know that I want to. It’s delightful, and especially surprising in how well it revels in the gray. In and out of it I should say. But, read it, don’t let me tell you.
The smell has come again. The smell which is more of a taste when I breathe in. It is completely un-identifiable. I don’t know what I could compare it to, except some kind of ancient dust. No, my teeth are not that far in their decay. This is something very different. Something that comes once every few years, and then the world tastes of it, distinctly and pervasively. Change. Change is what it tastes of, that is all it can be. But no identifiable or highly conspicuous change that I can see. I don’t know what it means, exactly. Only that one day, I breathe in– and I know. Something is different. Or will be soon. I only do not know what.
I dread the taste a little, and indulge in it when it passes my tongue. It is a rough, subtle taste, and I breathe in with my ears open wide, because of its strangeness, because of its exciting, slightly above-ground portent.
I don’t know what it means. I am a little afraid to know. I suppose that when whatever happens happens (and whether it was some magic, fate, divinity, or female intuition that signaled its arrival), I will have forgotten the taste, and not peg one to one.
Perhaps, now that you know that it is here, or at least was here last night, you can tell me what it may be.
